When Pantone announced their colour of the year, I can't say I was surprised. Associated with trust, dependability and honesty, Classic Blue is a colour we can all comfortably embrace in these strange times.
What’s the definition of Classic Blue?
We are surrounded by this deep blue in nature whether it is the night sky, the crest of a peacock’s head or the depths of the ocean. Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director of Pantone Colour Institute describes it as “A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to express and expand our thinking, challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication”.
What effect does it have on you when you wear it?
I have been dressing my clients in these more dramatic blues for some time now so they are not out of people’s comfort zone. Blue is very grounding to wear and never feels overwhelming. Deep blues project a sense of sophistication and tranquility and instils a sense of reliability and stability so it is perfect for your working wardrobe when you need to get the job done.
How versatile is it?
Very! Whether it is a classic blazer to wear with denim, a pleated skirt and white shirt for maximum contrast at work, or a velvety dress with gold earrings for evening, the deep blue is multi functional.
What colours does it work with?
Classic Blue is so adaptable and works all year round. Ignore outdated rules like 'blue and green should never be seen’ and pair deep blue with grass green. Experiment with fresh combinations and wear deep blue with blush pink or turmeric yellow. Or keep it classic and just accent it with gold jewellery.
